This is a rewrite of my previous article last year presenting fishing in my home village.

I am a managaer of <Fishing Center Mizube no Yakata>, a fishing base - BBQ house in Maze area of the Gero-city. Literally meaning <The house on the riverside>, this facility was built years ago by the then village governement of Maze, now part of the Gero-city, for the purpose of promoting fishing, agri-tourim, and exchange with city-dwellers for this authentic and traditional village rich with natural resources.

The Maze area is 25km long north to south, and 4km east to west. It is mountainous but there are no high peaks like the nearby Japan Alps. The village is surrounded by 2 mountain ranges, and the whole area is divided by the Maze river. About 1500 people live on the lowland hamlets scattered around close to the river. Upon arrival, a visitor gets impressed by lots of greens (most of the mountains are planted with ceder or cypress) and colors of the river, which are either blue or emerald green. There are no traffic lights nor convenience stores except for small grocery stores. Many houses are wooden-built and spacious because several generations used to occupy them. Rice paddies and vegetable fields provide a paisible and relaxed atomosphere.

The Maze river is known nationwide for fishing. Fish has been traditionally an important source of protein for locals. Among different types of fish, the Amago trout, a landlocked trout with orange spots, is especially appreciated for its juicy meat. Different methods of fishing is used for Amago, such as; bait casting;fly fishing introduced from the West; Tenkara fishing which is a traditional Japanese fly fishing; and lure fishing. While fly fishing uses a reel and variable length of line, in the Japanese Tenkara fishing there is no reel and the line length is fixed. This is because Japanese fishermen had to move in narrow streams, searching for the day’s catch to feed the family or for sale etc. Both use lightweight imitation baits <Fly> made of feather. There are several aquaculture pools for the Amago trout in the river. And once grown, Amago trout fish are released to the river to satisfy anglers’ needs as well as being delivered to restaurants.

The kind of fish far more important in the Maze river is Ayu (in Latin;Plecoglossus Altivelis). Ayu is an indigenous fish which can be found only in Japan and some parts of Korea, South China and Taiwan. The Ayu fish feeds on algae on rocks in the water, so the bait fishing method is useless. Instead we use a Tomozuri (literally, fishing with friends) method. At the end of the line a cultured Ayu which is normally purchased on the spot is connected through a metal nose ring (no worries, the fish has no pain sensor here), and from its back fin dangles a sparing hook. Now the angler guides a decoy Ayu fish toward the wild target fish. As Ayu is a very territorial fish, when the target fish attacks the live bait in order to protect his territory, he gets caught on a hook attached on the live bait. Japanese eat the Ayu fish not removing its intestinal organs. In fact. people prefer thier slight bitterness, and the taste is very much influenced by the quality of water. In 2007 there was a national Ayu tasting contest, and the Maze river won the the grand prix. Besides quality of water, the Maze river is known for alternation of pools (deep and slow water) and shallow (rapid) waters. Both are necessary for fish because fish take rest in the pools at night, and feeds at shallow waters during the day either for baits or algae.

Fishing in the Maze river is controlled by the local fishery cooperative association. Depending on the type of fish and period, licenses are sold at either daily (Ayu 2,500Yen, other fish 1,000) or annual (Ayu 12,000yen and other fish 5,000Yen). In order to facilitate introduction to fishing, the Fishing Center proposes gear hire and fishing tuitions.

3May Trout fishing contest, entry fee 3,000Yen (men)/2,000yen(women)/1,000yen(kids under 12).  500kg of Amago trout will  be released. Reception starts at 7h00, and the competition starts at 8h30. Held during the Golden Week which is our big vacation season, this is a good attraction for kids as well as for adults. Gear hire is possible for empty-handed participants. Various prizes. Entree fee will be reduced for parcipants staying at member accomodation facilities.
9-10May Weekend Tenraka fishing course (beginners welcome). Japan’s top 3 Tenkara coaches gather and this course is very popular. 15,000yen for 2 days.
16-17May Weekend lure fishing course (beginners welcome). Lure fishing is popular among children and ladies as the angler does not have to touch live baits. 15,000yen for 2 days.
23May Fly fishing tying clinic (for intermediate). Afternoon half day program (13h30 to 17h). Fly fishing is popular in Europe and North America but this requires skills in various fields, one of which is tying (fabricating) bug-imitation fries which should be appealing enough to fish. Cost is 3,000yen, ,
24May Fly fishing contest (for intermediate). Whole day for 5,000yen.
27-28June Weekend Ayu fishing course (for intermediate). If you know a little bit about Ayu fishing and want to be better, this is the must. Under the guidance of 4 professional tounamentors, participants make remarkable progress. 18,000yen for 2 days. 
July-August everyday  Beginners’ Ayu fishing
Gero-city Maze is the only place in Japan providing regular courses on Ayu Tomozuri (friend fishing) method. As this course is targeted at beginners, we provide all the necessary equipment. The morning is a classroom session, in the afternoon you go fishing in the river.
13 Sept Trout fishing closes to protect fishing resources
Note: weekend fishing courses are for 2 days. They cost 15,000 to 18,000yen, including accomodation and guiding but not fishing license. For 2 day’s courses participants are expected to understand some Japanese. Beginners’ Ayu fishing course is daily and costs 8,000Yen (in case of 2 guests for 1 instructor) or 12,000Yen (1 guest), including gear hire, live Ayu bait, and a fishing license. For the beginners’ Ayu lesson, English and French translationis provided.

Access to Maze
From Nagoya, take the JR Takayama line and drop at Gero-spa or Hida-Hagiwara station. Limited express train <Wide View Hida> connects Nagoya and Gero-spa in less than 2 hours. info on trains (Hida-Hagiwara reads HIDAHAGIWARA)
From Tokyo, several bus services connect Shinjuku bus terminal to in 5h30 Takayama (called little Kyoto because of old merchant houses) which is 1 hour in train from Hida-Hagiwara.
For transport after your arrival at Gero-spa or Hida-Hagiwara, please consult us. You can enter Maze either by bus (though not many), taxi, or our pick-up service. Some accomodation facilities provide pick-up service from the Hida-Hagiwara station as well.

以下は2008年に自分の村での釣りを紹介した投稿の書き直しである。

自分は、下呂市馬瀬地域にあるフィッシングセンター水辺の館（釣りやバーベキューのベース）のマネージャーである。水辺の館は当時の馬瀬村役場により、釣りや農業観光、都市住民との交流を自然豊かな馬瀬村にて推進するために建てたもの。

馬瀬地域は南北に25km、東西に4kmという地形。山がちだが近くの日本アルプスのような高いピークはない。村は2つの山脈に囲まれ、馬瀬川に分断されている。1500人ほどが川沿いの低地集落にばらばらと住んでいる。訪問者は緑（山の多くは杉とひのきで植林されている）と川の色に強く印象付けられる。川の表面は青かエメラルドグリーン。信号もなく、コンビにもなく、小さな食料店があるのみ。多くの家は木造で、何世代も一緒に住んでいたため大きな造り。水田や畑がのどかな雰囲気をかもし出す。

馬瀬川は全国的に釣りで知られている。魚は地元民により昔から貴重な蛋白源だった。生息する魚のうち、マスが陸封されたアマゴ（オレンジの斑点がある）はジューシーな肉質により特に好まれている。アマゴを釣るにはいくつかの方法がある。例えばエサ釣り、西洋から来たフライフィッシング、日本古来のテンカラ釣り、そしてルアー。フライフィッシングはリールと可変長のラインを使うが、日本のフライ釣り「テンカラ」ではリールはなくライン長は一定。両方とも羽根等を使用し軽量なイミテーションのエサを使う。村にはアマゴの養殖池がいくつかある。釣り客のニーズにこたえるため放流したり、レストランに出荷したりしている。

馬瀬でより重要な魚が鮎（ラテン名Plecoglossus Altivelis）。鮎は日本や韓国、南中国や台湾の一部のみに生息する。水中の石に生えるコケを食べるので、エサ釣りは使えない。代わりに友釣りという方法をとる。釣り師はラインの端に養殖されたオトリ鮎をリング経由で結びつけ、尻ビレから掛け針を垂らす。そしてこのオトリ鮎を野生の鮎のとこまで導くのだ。鮎はテリトリーを守る魚で、近くにオトリの鮎が来ると追い出すために体当たりをかけ、オトリに仕掛けられた針に掛かってしまうことになる。日本人は鮎の内臓を除かずに食べる。実際、このほのかな苦味が好まれており、味は水質に強く左右される。2007年には利き鮎大会があり、馬瀬川が全国チャンプになった。水質以外では、馬瀬川は渕（深くゆったりした流れ）と浅瀬（流れが速い）が繰り返すことで知られている。魚にとっては両方が必要。渕で夜は休み、日中は浅瀬にエサやコケを食みに行くのだ。
馬瀬川での釣りは地元漁業協同組合が管理しており、魚の種類と期間により入川券を購入する。日釣りは鮎2,500円、その他1,000円。年間は鮎12,000円、その他5,000円である。釣りにより親しめるように、水辺の館では釣り用品レンタルや釣り教室がある。

2月28日 渓流釣り解禁
5月3日 アマゴ釣り大会 参加料は男性3,000円、女性2,000円、子ども1,000円。500kgのアマゴが放流される。受付は7時、競技は8h30開始。ビッグバカンスであるゴールデンウィーク中に開催され、子どもにも大人にも楽しめる。賞品各種あり。参加料は地域内の宿泊施設に泊まれば割引になる。
5月10-11日 テンカラ釣り教室（中級者対象）
5月9-10日 テンカラ釣り教室（初心者歓迎）。国内トッププロ3名が指導する講座は人気が高い。2日間で15,000円
5月16-17日 ルアー釣り教室（初心者歓迎）。ルアー釣りは活きエサに触ることがなく女性や子どもにも気軽に楽しめる。2日間15,000円。
5月23日 フライ・タイイング教室(中級者対象）。半日13h30-17h。フライはヨーロッパや北米の渓流釣りでは人気だがかなりの技術が必要で、その1つが虫に似せたフライ（疑似餌）作り。参加料3,000円。
5月24日 フライ釣り大会。1日で参加料5,000円。
7月4-5日 鮎釣り教室 (中級者)。鮎釣りをやったことがあって技術向上を望むのなら是非受講を。4名のトーナメントプロに教わり受講者は教わることが多い。2日間18,000円
7-8月の土日祝日 初心者鮎釣り教室。鮎の友釣り講座の常設は日本では下呂市馬瀬だけ。初心者向けなので手ぶらで参加でき全ての装備を貸し出している。午前中座学、午後実際に川での釣りを行う。
9月13日 資源保護のため渓流釣り期間終了
なお、週末の釣り教室は2日間で費用15,000-18,000円で宿泊や講師料は含むが入川券は別。また参加者はある程度日本語を解することが必要。初心者鮎釣り教室は日帰りで講師1名に対し生徒1人なら12,000円、2人なら8,000円の参加料になり、これには用品レンタル、親鮎、そして入川券までも含むもの。初心者鮎釣り教室には英語またはフランス語の通訳もつけられる。

馬瀬へのアクセス
名古屋からはJR高山線で下呂温泉または飛騨萩原駅で下車。特急「ワイドビューひだ」で名古屋から下呂温泉まで2時間を切る。 電車情報（飛騨萩原はHIDAHAGIWARAと入力)
東京からは新宿バスターミナルから高山（古い町並みがあり小京都と呼ばれる）までバスが数本あり5時間半で結ぶ。下呂温泉または飛騨萩原に到着してからのことはご相談を。具体的にはバス（本数少ない）、タクシーまたは別途ピックアップによることになる。地域内の宿泊施設には飛騨萩原駅からピックアップサービスをしてくれるところもある。
