This is an article by Nave Fung from Hongkong. For her 2nd visit to Japan, she came to Maze and spent 5 nights, her visit to Maze through the Couchsurfing network.

Japan is a really cool nation however  the Wifi internet is not common here. i feel surprised that even at the airport i couldn’t reach any free Wifi service. For the tourist it is totally inconvenient, in this trip typhoon affected my flight schedule upon my arrival. My flight was delayed and i needed to contact to the hostel to inform them i will be late for my check-in. When i arrived to down town was already mid-night. Even i can use the public telephone at the airport but you should know most of the hostel people can not speak english or understand english well, it is easiler to email them because they can read better english.

IPhone and netbook are really popular nowadays no matter you are going for vacation or business trip. Before my japan trip i downloaded some apps (software) into my iPhone, such as japan JR line map, japan weather online, GPS japan map. However, because of no Wifi internet service for public i wouldn’t use these apps, some of them can not function without internet. which is pain in the ass i can not check my emails, update my blog in the trip and contact my friends on facebook.

and the other thing is the world wide cell phone serive is not working in Japan as which is the most annoying thing when people travel as a group. how could we contact each other when we didn’t rent a local phone in japan? And how could my office contact me if there is something emergency happened during my leave? That doesn’t make any sense to foreigner that the japan cell phone system is different to the rest of the world.

i know that the travel can rent a local cell phone at the airport but which is really costly and why should i bother to have two phones with me? i love my iPhone, i already have too much stuffs in my backpack and i don;t want to risk because i might lose the phone somewhere when i am rushing for the train or something.

As a Hong Kong citizen, i can tell you that HK government and the telecom companies provided free Wifi in most of the sight seeing places, you can see a sign at the telephone booth, of course airport as well, for people connects to the internet easily. Beside that, customer can access to the internet at most of the coffee shop and restaurant during the break. if you are a business man, you can check your company emails and reply client emails whenever you want to.

When i was on my way from Kanayama to Takayama. i have to change another train at Nagoya station. i walked down to the subway from the platform then i saw there are so many different lines however there is no big screen to show which train is which platform. Are you assume me that i have to walk all the way with my luggage to check every single line to see which train i should take? It would be great appreciated that if the japan train system and sign are more clear or more internationalize, which means “user friendly”.

Hopefully Japanese government can realized that to popularize Japan as a lovely travel city, it is important and necessary to improve and standardize the train and sign systems.

日本は素敵な国だけど、無線LANがあまりない。空港（訳者注：名古屋）でも無料の無線LANサービスがないのにはびっくりした。観光客にはとても不便。今回の旅行では台風のためにフライトが遅れて、宿泊先のホステルにチェックインが遅れると伝える必要があった。ダウンタウンに着いたときは既に真夜中。空港の公衆電話は使えるけど宿の人たちは必ずしも英語をうまく話せない。e-mailした方がよく通じることが多い。

最近は、Iフォンやネットブック（訳者注：携帯用パソコン）がとても人気でバカンスでもビジネス旅行にも使われる。日本への旅行前にIフォンにいくつかアプリケーション（ソフト）をダウンロードした。例えばJR路線図や日本用オンライン天気情報サービス、GPSの地図など。でも公共の場で無線LANサービスがないのでは使えず困った。メールチェックも、ブログの更新も、facebook（訳者注：フェイスブック＝友達同士の近況報告に使われるネット上のサービス）で友達に連絡もできない。

他に、一番困るのは、世界標準の携帯電話が日本では使えないこと。グループで旅行する時に携帯をレンタルしないとお互いに連絡が取れない。休暇を取って日本に来てる時、本国の会社から緊急時に連絡を取りたいときどうしたらいいの？日本の携帯だけ他の国と違うのが、外国人に取ってはおかしく思える。

空港で携帯をレンタルできるのは知ってるけど高いし何で2つも電話が要る？自分のIフォンが好きだし、バックパックは既に荷物で一杯でもう1つ電話を持ったら電車に飛び乗るときに落としたりしないか心配。

香港市民として知っているのは、香港政庁と電話会社がほとんどの観光地で無料の無線LANを整備していること。基地となる電話ボックスにはその旨の表示があるし、もちろん空港にはサービスがあって、インターネットにつなぐのが簡単。加えて、一休みする喫茶店やレストランの多くにもインターネットがあって、例えばビジネスマンならどこにいても会社やお客さんからのメールに回答できる。

JR高山線に乗るのに名古屋で乗り換える必要があるけど、地下鉄から乗り換えてJRではプラットフォームがいっぱい。どこがどこへ行くのか示す大きな電光掲示板がない。荷物を引きずってひとつずつ確認しなければならないのか？日本の電車や標識の仕組みがもっとわかりやすく国際的に、すなわち「ユーザーフレンドリー」だといいのに。

日本の政府には、訪問客を増やすには電車や標識の仕組みを標準化し改善することが必要だとわかって欲しい。
